To make a cake lower in cholesterol (whether homemade or from a box mix), simply use egg substitute or egg whites instead of whole eggs, and applesauce instead of vegetable oil. The cake will still be delicious and it's better for you. Applesauce is especially good in spice cake and carrot cake.

p.s. this tip drastically cuts the fats and calories in baked goods.  I used these substitutions for almost everything I bake.........muffins, quick breads, etc..........even brownies!!
